Simon with mom
Simon weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces at birth. His APGAR score was 8 and 9. He’d finish a bottle every couple of hours except at night, when he’d give us about a 4 hour stretch of sleep. He was at 50% for weight and 25% for height. Sounds pretty normal, right?
He smiled for the first time at seven weeks. He died 47 days later.
I thought that Simon was healthy. I thought that he was safe. I did not realize that little hearts could just stop working. I did not know that children died from sudden cardiac arrest.
Since his death, I’ve learned that thousands of kids die each year from sudden cardiac arrest. Some of the time, the doctors call is SIDS. Most of the time, they faint or collapse while playing sports.
I know that I can’t bring Simon back. However, I can educate you about sudden cardiac arrest so that you can do a better job of protecting your child.
